Operation Wish List (OWL)
Granting Wishes
Operation Wish List or OWL was established in 2010 to provide
assistance to Austin Independent School
District schools
which have a high percentage of students at risk. Each year the OWL committee concentrates on the needs of one or two schools.
Teachers and staff submit requests for educational materials and
equipment to support their work and promote student achievement. The committee evaluates the requests and makes the purchases.
In some cases, the wishes that are fulfilled have been for the whole school, like a computer-based reading program. At other times there have been very specific requests, such as a swing for a special needs student. Other wishes have been for reading tables, science equipment, picnic tables for an outdoor classroom and math programs. We even purchased a set of world drums used for both music education and for an afterschool program.
Books, Books, Books
To foster learning and encourage reading, OWL has provided dozens of elementary and middle schools with funds for new library books. In many cases, librarians have been able to double the number of books they can purchase for their school that year.
